What is Performance against a Benchmark?

Performance against a Benchmark measures performance relative to a standard index, typically a broad market equity index such as the S&P 500. The rationale for this comparison is to facilitate an analysis of whether or not a fund manager or investor has outperformed or underperformed the benchmark and therefore determine their ability to add alpha.
