What is the difference between positions & transactions?

The distinction between positions and transactions is important, and how they work within our system will affect how you upload them to get the most accurate view of your portfolio.

Positions, when all of them are uploaded, establish the state of your portfolio as of a certain date. Individually they represent a quantity of a specific asset that you already own on a specific day. Shorts are also positions, and will have a negative quantity.

Positions do not affect cash or other assets when they are uploaded. However, cash balances are considered a position and should be uploaded amongst the rest.

Transactions execute movements in your portfolio. They are the addition or deduction of an instrument and will have an opposing cash movement.

For example if you execute a transaction to buy more shares of a company, this will deduct the cost from your account cash balance and add the quantity of shares to your position with that company.

Within illio, the words transactions and trades mean the same thing.
